GOLF Magazine : Tour of Duty

The February 2009 edition of Sports Illustrated’s GOLF Magazine features a story I shot late last year about Ron Chambers, an American veteran who returns to Vietnam to reconnect with the country he fought in as a marine 40 years ago. I haven’t seen the print edition yet, but the article is online here.

This assignment was definitely one of the highlights of 2008 for me. I spent two days in Danang with Ron and Michael Walker, who penned the piece. Ron had spent a good deal of time in and around Danang during the war, and it was an incredible experience to walk down the fairways of a brand new golf course with Ron as he described events that transpired there decades ago. The course designers even left a crumbling French bunker on the course, not something you see everyday on the back nine – nice touch!

I’m not a golfer, and I have mixed feelings about golf courses popping up like KFC chains in developing countries, but the golfing, which Ron and Mike did along the newly coined Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail was a good hook for the story. Most importantly, it was the impetus for Ron to come back for the first time since 1968, a trip I’m sure he’ll always cherish.

  1. I am both a photographer and a golfer. And my skill in each can surely be questioned. Thanks for sharing this article; I look forward to reading it later. I really enjoyed the photography that you have shared here. Well done!

  2. Loved the snaps mate, seems like it was a great gig.
