Canon Photo Marathon Vietnam 2008

Canon is hosting its annual Photo Marathon, next weekend in Hanoi, and the following weekend in Saigon. It looks like a fun event, and a great way to jumpstart a little creativity and meet other shooters around town at the same time. Here’s the skinny:

Hanoi: 11 Oct 2008
Ho Chi Minh City: 18 Oct 2008
Eligibility:

The competition is open to all nationalities who is living in Vietnam with no restriction to prior experience or age.

On the actual day of the contest, each participant will be given 3 separate themes at different times to base their photographs on. They are given 3 hours to complete each thematic work and must return to the contest location with their pictures, download them onto the server before getting their next assignment.

After completed this three themes artwork, the participants will have to wait for the prizes delivery ceremony at the same location from 1930 – 2130PM. Winners will be announce and awarded at the same day.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I do, however, have two concerns (as always when it comes to photo contests).

1- Canon is very clear, even using bold font, to indicate that The organisers reserve the right to use any submitted photograph for any purposes without compensation to the photographer.

Again and again we see similar conditions apply to photography contests worldwide. By participating in this contest, you are relinquishing copyright of your creative work. I won’t rant, but suffice to say this is a bad deal if you have ambitions of being a professional photographer. For the talented amateur shooters that this contest is mostly targeted for, I don’t think they’ll mind.

2- Top prize for this contest is a Canon 450D. Yawn. How about a 50D guys? Or the just-announced 5D Mark II? If this is a contest aimed at talented amateurs, why not reward the winner with a mid-to high-end camera? Most of the contestants will be shooting with consumer dslrs to begin with, it would be great for them to earn the chance to win a high-end camera they would otherwise not be able to afford? Nikon really took a huge chunk out of Canon’s once dominant DSLR market share this year, and Canon seriously needs to rethink its marketing strategies. Giving away low-end gear to photography enthusiasts = poor marketing strategy. Giving away high-end gear to photography enthusiasts = good marketing strategy.

This is kindof like Ford hosting a contest and the grand prize is an Escort, when they could easily be giving away a Mustang.

THE GOOD NEWS: On the plus side, Canon will be hosting a DSLR service clinic, offering free cleaning for Canon cameras and lenses. Its a good opportunity to get your sensors cleaned by professionals, so get to it!
